How Do I Get Rid of Anxiety? Part One

How do I get rid of anxiety? Part One: Overview

How do I get rid of anxiety? Have you been asking yourself this question?

It’s a very common one to ask! And I have some tips I’d like to offer you.

Now sometimes to help understand how to help ourselves with anxiety, we need to understand a few things first.

Understanding Anxiety

It is important to understand what anxiety is, how anxiety expresses itself, and why it is an important emotion to have. Why might you ask? Because knowledge is power. When you have more awareness and understanding of why something is happening, it takes the fear and power away from it.

For example, if you don’t know why your heart is racing, you are sweating and you can’t see straight, of course it is going to be scary and fearful! Anyone in that same position would feel what you are feeling.

But if you know why your heart is racing, why you are getting sweaty and why can’t see straight- that’s where you have power.

How Knowledge helps

Having knowledge helps because maybe because you have noticed these sensations before, so they are familiar. Maybe you have learned about anxiety so you have an idea of what is happening to you. Perhaps you even know a bit about what you can do about it! When you know what it is, you can acknowledge that it may be unpleasant, but it won’t be so terrifying.

And when it isn’t so terrifying, your body can calm itself just enough so that you can remember what skills to you that help you. Then, after you use one, two, or as many as you need, your body will come back to your normal. The anxiety will quiet, and you can go back to living life again.

Now doesn’t that sound helpful?

It’s really important to learn about anxiety and the helpful skills to use. Because then you can help yourself find our own balance and overcome the intensity of the anxiety.

Does that mean you can be free from all anxiety forever? Unfortunately, no. Anxiety is a really important emotion to have and you will always have it. The hope here is that overtime it just doesn’t have to be so overwhelming and debilitating.

So what do you think? Are you ready to learn more about anxiety?

Stay tuned for the articles in the coming weeks! Part two is a great educational piece on different kinds of anxiety people struggle with. Parts three to six will review 4 types of skills that are helpful to use with anxiety, with more than 10 different skills to try out and practice!
