Gentle Intentions for Healing in the Coming Year

As we stand at the beginning of a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the journey we’ve walked and the loved ones we’ve lost along the way. For those who are navigating the intricate path of grief, embarking on another year without your loved one’s cherished presence can feel both daunting and tender. In this blog post, we’ll explore the nuances of starting a new year while grieving, offering warmth, and compassionate guidance for those who find themselves on this unique journey; offering gentle intentions for healing in the coming year.

Acknowledging the Complexity of Grief

Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and intricate process. No two relationships are the same, and no two grief experiences are the same either. As the calendar turns, it’s essential to acknowledge your grief – looking at what has happened in the past year, and what is to come for this coming year.

In this process, it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions—nostalgia for the moments shared, sadness for their absence, anger for the circumstances connected with their death, and even moments of unexpected joy. Each year, your grief will be experienced differently as you move further away from their death date. Give yourself the grace to experience these emotions without judgment, recognizing that each sentiment is a thread in the tapestry of your unique grieving journey.

Creating Meaningful Rituals for Remembrance

Embracing the new year can be an opportunity to create meaningful rituals for remembrance. I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what rituals were helpful and meaningful for you this past year, to bring those forward into the coming year; and to look at other possible rituals you may want to bring into your coming year to support. If you are looking for some suggestions of possible rituals, consider some of these possibilities:

  • Light a candle in honor of your loved one
  • Spend time looking at a photo of them
  • Make their favourite meal or go to a restaurant you enjoyed together
  • Listen to their favourite song or music
  • Watch their favourite show/movie, or personal videos you have that captured them
  • Write a heartfelt letter to express your feelings
  • Engage in an activity they enjoyed
  • Wear a piece of their clothing
  • Go to their favourite place, or a place that reminds you of them
  • Talk with others who can support you while you talk about them
  • Speak to them out loud
  • Volunteer or donate to a cause they were passionate about or that is connected to them for you

These rituals can serve as touchstones, grounding you in a connection that transcends time and space. In these moments of remembrance, you carry the essence of your loved one into the new year.

Setting Gentle Intentions for Self-Care

You are no stranger to the weight of grief. You know firsthand how much it takes from you. As you prepare to navigate the challenges of grief in the coming year, setting gentle intentions for self-care becomes paramount. It is a crucial practice to develop to help you come through the deepest depths of your grief healthily and helpfully. Recognize the importance of prioritizing your emotional well-being. Whether it’s taking moments of solitude, developing a breathing practice that is supportive and helpful, indulging in activities that bring comfort, or seeking support from friends and family, self-care acts as a balm for the soul, allowing you to navigate the journey of grief with greater resilience.

Embracing the Waves of Grief with Compassion

You know that grief, much like the ebb and flow of the tide, comes in waves. Some moments and days may feel more challenging than others, and that’s okay. Embrace these waves of grief with compassion for yourself, as it is in these moments that you are helping yourself process what has happened. It is in these moments that you grow more capacity to hold your grief, and neurologically understand and make sense of your grief. Allow the process to unfold organically, acknowledging that healing is not linear, and there is no time limit. Grief is forever – and it can change in time. In the new year, grant yourself the space to grieve at your own pace, offering kindness to the tender parts of your heart.

Explore Options for Ongoing Support

As you embark on another year while grieving, consider exploring options for ongoing support, such as guided grief journals, grief support groups, or one-on-one grief counselling. Each of these options is designed to provide ongoing support, offering a compassionate space for you on your journey through anticipatory grief, the first year after death, and grief overall.
